Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents
Quite significantly, bicycle and pedestrian accidents usually involve more extensive injuries than collisions between motor vehicles because the pedestrian and bicyclist are unprotected from the blunt impact of a motor vehicle.
The statistics speak for themselves: According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), there were approximately 66,000 pedestrian accidents in 2006. Of this number, approximately 61,000 resulted in injury and about 4700 proved fatal. And pursuant to the most recent data available through NHTSA, there were approximately 45,000 bicycle accidents across the nation in 2006, of which over 44,000 resulted in injury and more than 700 proved fatal.
